Cesar Chien
Introduction
If you grew up in the UK in the 90s or early 2000s, you probably remember Turkey Twizzlers – the controversial, yet incredibly popular school lunch item. Although they were eventually taken off the menu due to concerns over their high fat and salt content, many people still have fond memories of these tasty treats. And now, thanks to this recipe, you can enjoy them once again – with a healthier twist!
Ingredients
For the Turkey Twizzlers, you will need:
500g turkey mince
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 egg
50g breadcrumbs
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Sweet Potato Fries, you will need:
2 medium sweet potatoes
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Turkey Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the turkey mince, onion, garlic, thyme, oregano, smoked paprika, egg, breadcrumbs, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix everything together until well combined and the mixture is sticky.
Step 2: Shape the Twizzlers
Take a small handful of the turkey mixture and roll it into a sausage shape, about 10cm long and 2cm thick. Repeat until all the mixture is used up – you should have around 12 twizzlers.
Step 3: Cook the Twizzlers
Preheat a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the twizzlers to the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Step 4: Prepare the Sweet Potato Fries
While the twizzlers are cooking, preheat your oven to 200°C. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into thin fries. In a mixing bowl, combine the sweet potato fries with the olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss everything together until the fries are well coated.
Step 5: Cook the Sweet Potato Fries
Spread the sweet potato fries out in a single layer on a large baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!
Once the twizzlers and sweet potato fries are cooked, serve them together on a plate or in a lunchbox. These Turkey Twizzlers are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup or BBQ sauce.
